Recognizing People by Alexander T Paulos

Alexander T Paulos graduated from Brigham Young University
with a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology.

"In this groundbreaking work, Alexander T Paulos discusses recognizable human patterns found in the world today. It is meant to be a resource for those who desire to understand themselves and others. The book talks about ways in which the different "types" of people think, make decisions, and speak. It is a great book for understanding interpersonal relationships.http://www.recognizing-people.com/ http://www.paulosrecognition.com/

Review:  Since I got the book, I've been nearly unable to put it down. This is a wealth of information, but almost too much, which will take a while to process and integrate. There was a link on the page to request your type by submitting a picture.  When you do so, you are then asked to buy his book directly from the author (rather than amazon) to get the consult.  Now I realize that's a great deal, even though the price is higher than on amazon.

Another quandry about the book is that I have spent 25 years using MBTI with clients.  Since the premise of this book is to go to the sources before Myers-Briggs, and to redefine most of the categories, I almost feel like it causes a loss of confidence in an incredible existing tool.  Granted I have always known the limitations of the MBTI, as a subjective measure.  But it has had great utility for me in my work.  This new material will certainly keep me thinking, probably for years.  (I don't disagree with the basis of his redefinitions.)  As a part of my second consult, he already pointed me in some good directions to use this material to help me work better with clients.

The addition of motion recognition is fascinating.  I do appreciate that this method introduces beginning with what is actual in your face and movement, rather than what you perceive to be your preferences.  I will be curious to see what we are doing with this material in 10 years.

WHY YOU CAN'T TRANSLATE YOUR TYPE TO THE MBTI LETTERS

  • Out vs. In  and Inhibited vs. Disinhibited can combine 4 different ways, not just two, as you can have a bold or shy Introvert and bold or shy Extrovert, and he doesn't use those words for other reasons.
  • Line vs. Curve is not Sensing vs. Intuitive, words he dropped for a reason, the words have become biased
  • Box vs. Circle are closer to Thinker vs. Feeler, but redefined as objective vs. subjective
  • Point vs. Wave is only similar to Judging vs. Perceiving, in that points want to collapse possibilities (to determine a decision, find closure) and Waves want to propogate possibilities (keep a wave going)

Socionics

Socionix or Socionics is a Russian study of MBTI type personality which has a face recognition model.

Socionics, in psychology and sociology, is a theory of information processing and personality type, distinguished by its information model of the psyche (called "Model A") and a model of interpersonal relations. It incorporates Carl Jung's work on Psychological Typeswith Antoni Kępiński's theory of information metabolism. Socionics is a modification of Jung's personality type theory that uses eight psychic functions, in contrast to Jung's model, which used only four. These functions process information at varying levels of competency and interact with the corresponding function in other individuals, giving rise to predictable reactions and impressions—a theory of intertype relations.[1]  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socionics

Types from the Alpha Quadra enjoy freely exchanging new ideas and theories as a form of intellectual leisure. They like to systematize knowledge and create new categories and speculative hypotheses without necessarily intending to see their theories tested or implemented.

Beta Quadra
ISTJ, ENFJ, INFP, ESTP
in MBTI it would be ISTP, INFJ
Phlegmatic, Choleric, Melancholic, Sanguine
http://gallery.socionix.com/Beta/
This quadra encourages dramatic self-expression with elements of theatricism and melodrama. They enjoy finding artistic means to express romantic, abstract ideals and feelings.

Delta Quadra
INFJ, ESTJ, ISTP, ENFP
in MBTI it would be INFP, ISTJ
Phlegmatic, Choleric, Melancholic, Sanguine
http://gallery.socionix.com/Delta/
Types from the Delta Quadra value pragmatism, hard work, beautifully functional items, and earthy humor and enjoy "productive" relationships where people do projects together. They are usually emotionally subdued and like to discuss topics seriously with the intention of implementing their conclusions.

Gamma Quadra
ENTJ, INTP, ESFP, ISFJ
in MBTI it would be INTJ, ISFP
Choleric, Melancholic, Sanguine, Phlegmatic

Types from the Gamma Quadra have a realistic, materialistic outlook on life, relationships, and society and tend to view life as a marketplace where forcefulness, positive thinking, social maneuvering, hustle and bustle, and direct humor get you where you need to go.

Temperaments: There is a basic Four Temperaments idea that's been around for the past few thousand years—Choleric (EJ), Phlegmatic (IJ), Sanguine (EP), Melancholic (IP). I don't have the source on this.

Michelle Williams

I think Michelle is definitely a Spring Sanguine,
but with a Winter Melancholic influence.

She has a defined, crisp jaw,
and her nose is upturned, but sharp.
Her profile is somewhat straighter than a typical spring's.

She looks very stern and serious.

And she definitely found herself when she went to the cropped pixie.
She does not need that much movement around her face.

Here eye has a spring starburst,
in a spring brown.

as Glinda

Her brows are a bit strong, but the dress has a beautiful animated pattern.

Here she rocks an animated black and white pattern,
which you might not expect her to wear.

Again, she likes black and white.

Animated, embroidered effect,
with clean design lines.

Chunky black and white stripes.

A beautiful spring color.

Awakening Beauty

Awakening Beauty the Dr. Hauschka Way
Awakening Beauty the Dr. Hauschka Way
by Susan West Kurz
$23.40  http://www.drhauschka.com/
This natural beauty book has a section on the Four Humors.

The Four Faces Within
p. 28-33

"Choosing the bath, exercise, or meditative practice that's right for you depends on your ability to see your current imbalances.  One of the most effective tools for self-examination and rebalancing ins the Four Temperaments... Each of the four personality types has a positive and negative pole.  Each can become imbalanced and turn into it's own form of stress and conflict...

Choleric Temperament: Let's Get it Done - Now!
When you are in the choleric temperament, you are a doer and a leader. You take on challenges and get things done... The ancient Greeks associated this temperament with the fire element -- and, indeed, when you are in choleric temperament, your emotions tend to fiery. But as stress builds, your determination can turn into stubbornness.  Your attention to detail and insistence on making things right can become the basis for frustration and outbursts of anger... Whenever an imbalanced choleric nature arises, it's time to relax, back up, and exhale... When you find your choleric temperament out of control, take a warm lavender bath.  Lavendar cools and relaxes the body.  It reduces tension and inflammation.  As the tension dissipates, circulation improves... Spend time in nature... Get a massage, listen to soft music, and talk about your inner conflicts and frustrations with someone who loves and supports you... Meanwhile, increase your consumption of cooked vegetables, avoid spicy foods, and reduce or eliminate alcohol.

Sanguine Temperament: All Is Groovy

The sanguine temperament is characterized by optimism, humor, and a generally upbeat nature.  You're positive, happy, and bent on enjoying life.  Little or nothing gets you down... Sanguines can actually carry the good life a little too far, partly due to an intense curiosity.  You want to study everything.  Life thoroughly fascinates you, and every subject seems to draw your attention... The more the sanguine becomes imbalanced, the less committed you are to any single endeavor or any individual person.  You have trouble getting things done.  You can't concentrate, discipline yourself or work hard.  You become impractical, flighty, and -- like with element with which this temperament is associated -- a little too airy.  You party too much, work too little, and make mistakes too easily... When Sanguine is out of balance, it's time to get real.  The place to start is with a spruce bath.  Spruce has a dense, resinous aroma that grounds the senses and restores our intimate connection with our body and nervous system... In addition to the spruce bath, try vigorous exercise... Eat more cooked whole grains... Whole grains strengthen the nervous system and ground us... Avoid sugar, alcohol and (needless to say) recreational drugs.

The Phlegmatic: Everything's in Order, and I Want to Keep it That Way!

The phlegmatic temperament gives you the ability to think things through, to envision the future, and to create a plan for the fulfillment of goals.  This is the part of you that loves order and finds safety in routine... As wonderful as all of these qualities are, when you're out of balance they can form a kind of prison.  Life becomes ponderous, predictable, and flat with no excitement and little joy.  You can become dull and boring... In other words, it's time to wake up.  A lemon bath provides a therapeutic awakening of the nervous system and the senses.  Lemon captures the warmth and energy of the sun... In addition to the lemon bath, eat more warming spices, such as garlic, cumin, coriander, pepper and roasted red pepper, all of which warm and awaken the heart.  Minimize dairy products, which can reinforce the phlegmatic nature by creating stagnation. Listen to music that inspires your spirit, and opens your heart. Let yourself remember old ambitions and dreams.  Do something entirely different each day.  Dance... take up a new hobby... plan a trip...

The Melancholic Temperament: He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother

When you are in the melancholic nature, you are caring, compassionate, and openhearted.  You think about life less from the practical perspective than from the philosophical.  You are spiritually oriented.  You see the big picture and the great sweep of history.  Yet you connect to individuals, especially to their pain.  You listen attentively to people who want to share their tale of woe.  In the melancholic pole of your nature, you are introverted and extremely sensitive... You are intuitive and highly perceptive... In the melancholic character, you can be extremely moody, moving from elation to depression within minutes.  You also tend to worry a lot, especially about your physical health... Melancholics wallow in deep existential questions, often finding pleasure in worry and dread... If the melancholic nature has gotten the better of you, it's time to get out of your head and back into your body.  Start with a series of rosemary baths, which will warm your body, awaken your senses, and dramatically boost your circulation.  Rosemary revitalizes the body and lights the fire of our physical powers and passions.  It puts us back in touch with our choleric nature... Also, try soaking your feet in  spruce  baths... Eat cooked whole grains and root vegetables daily.  Avoid raw vegetables and raw fruit, both of which cool the body and send the life forces upward.  Keep the body warm, especially your feet.

Face Shapes

Correlating face shape to personality is not new!  Not only were the Chinese and Greeks doing it, but Caygill incorporated it into her color system (1980), and her students followed.

SPRING, TYPE 1, SANGUINE, ENTHUSIAST, AIR

SPRING Caygill (1980): "The face is generally rounded - rounded cheeks, eyes, nose, and chin - or it may be heart shaped with pointed chin. Usually there are ...indentations under high cheekbones, and often dimples. The face may express animation even in sleep." "Contours of the body are also molded and rounded... Those who are slender are not angular."

Rounded or square features need buoyant effects. (Spring)
Rounded: full, plump (Spring)

"the choleric and sanguine types have convex facial profiles, but the melancholic and phlegmatic have concave profiles.http://face-and-emotion.com/dataface/physiognomy/practice.jsp

convex profile (generally looks younger)

Convex: The person with the convex profile types have a sloping forehead, slightly prominent brows and a large nose that is slightly curved. They also have a receding chin shape. These people come under the category of hard-headed people who have a demanding nature and an impatient streak.

The marks of the convex are the forehead prominent at the brows, sloping back as it rises. Eyes full and prominent. Nose long, high in the bridge, and curving outward from root to tip. Mouth prominent, lips pushed outward, the chin receding, or sloping backward toward the throat. Convex traits: Quickness of thought and action, practical, keen observer, interested in facts, ready in speech. Energy is the keynote, impatient, impulsive, short endurance. This is the keen, quick, practical, impulsive person, the worker.

Caygill Spring: “The face is generally rounded–rounded cheeks, eye, nose, chin—or it may be heart shaped with pointed chin...dimples.”

Tuttle (2010) Type 1: “Face shape: circular or heart shaped.” “Cheeks: circles...dimples” “Nose: circle shape.”

Segerstrom (1980) Type 1:
"Type Ones look smooth and rounded.  Appearing younger than their years, T-1s' faces, cheeks, eyes and figures are predominately curved.  With short or upturned noses, rosebud lips and curly hair, they move freely, quickly and impulsively.  Their speech is soft and rapid...

One immediate tipoff to this harmony is the grin which lights the face.  T-1s seem to be bursting with health and good spirits."

SUMMER, TYPE 2, PHLEGMATIC, COMPASSIONATE, WATER

SUMMER Caygill (1980): "Usually the fingers are tapered, long and slender. The movements of the hand are graceful with no awkwardness."

Molded or chiseled features need soft, relaxed effects. (Summer and Winter)
Molded: classic features, oval, not highly defined (Summer or Winter)
Chiseled: etched sharply, features highly defined (Summer or Winter)

"the choleric and sanguine types have convex facial profiles, but the melancholic and phlegmatic have concave profiles.http://face-and-emotion.com/dataface/physiognomy/practice.jsp

concave profile

Concave: The people with concave profile type have a prominent forehead, almost flat eyebrows, smaller and straight or slightly inward curved or bent nose. They have a flat mouth and well-formed chin that has an outward curve. These people are thought to be good-natured and patient lot. They tend to judge over things intentionally.

The concave marks are, the forehead prominent above and flat at the brows. Chin prominent at the point, sloping inward towards the lips. The eyes are deep-set, hose short, low in the bridge, curving inward from root to tip. The mouth recedes. Concave traits: Slowness of action and thought and speech, great endurance. Interested in theories, meditative, absent minded, philosophizes about everything, mild, moderate energy, patient, determined, impractical, staunch, dependable. They are the calm, deliberate, good natured, theoretical types, the thinkers.

Segerstrom (1980) Type 2:

"Type Twos have a gentle ageless appearance.  Although rarely pretty as children, they mature into delicate beauty.  Bodies are more elongated than T-1s, foreheads more generous, chins straighter or receding and features more refined.  Hands and feet of Type Twos are long and aristrocratic with gently tapering fingers and toes - gracefully designed for aristocratic endeavors and expensive shoes.  Type Two's quiet coloring matches soft voices and non flashy personalities."

AUTUMN, TYPE 3, DYNAMIC, CHOLERIC, EARTH

AUTUMN Caygill (1980): "Autumn women are energetic, sure in their movements, solid and firm of step, or quick and wiry. Others may be loose-jointed, angular and graceful."
"The features are fairly strong and definite. The head is usually large in proportion to the body, and the chin is firm. The usually strong face will preclude any attempt on the part of the Autumn woman to appear "pretty." If she is pretty, this quality should not be emphasized, since it will not dramatize her personality. She should strive rather for an appearance of smartness and chic."

Oblique or aquiline features need swift effects. (Autumn, Winter, and Elfin type)
Oblique: angular, eyes and brows diagonally drawn
Squared: blunt, lacking angles, frequently concave profile
Aqualine: narrow face, convex profile, arched nose, protruding forehead

"the choleric and sanguine types have convex facial profiles, but the melancholic and phlegmatic have concave profiles.http://face-and-emotion.com/dataface/physiognomy/practice.jsp

This is the keen, quick, practical, impulsive person, the worker.

Segerstrom (1980) Type 3:

"Type Threes are more earthy, exotic or dangerous than the other types.  Features have more angularity and sharpness... They have courser hair than T-2s and rough textured skin... Eyes may be set obliquely or deeply...Brows may be bushy or angular... Large, aquiline, convex-curved, or flared nostriled noses may grace these interesting faces.  Cheekbones are often high above flat cheeks. Jaws may be sharp or jutting."

WINTER, TYPE 4, MELANCHOLIC, ANALYTICAL, EARTH

WINTER Caygill (1980): "...having high cheekbones, narrow faces, convex profiles. Their features are even, and often chiseled in appearance."   wait? convex or concave?

"the choleric and sanguine types have convex facial profiles, but the melancholic and phlegmatic have concave profiles.http://face-and-emotion.com/dataface/physiognomy/practice.jsp

Segerstrom (1980)Type 4:
"Type 4s are beautiful.  Their perfection of feature plus, contrasting darkness/lightness immediately draws attention... Both whites of eyes and teeth are whiter than those of other groups.  T-4s' smooth skin is white as porcelain... Faces are elongated ovals with well proportioned features which contribute to a flowing, finely-sculptured look.  Hands and feet are slim and graceful."
